Open to staying away from Rajya Sabha: Navjot Singh Sidhu

Days after being nominated to the Rajya Sabha, former cricketer turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu issued a statement saying that he is open to ‘staying away from the Rajya Sabha’ in the future.

Days after being nominated to the Rajya Sabha, former cricketer turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu issued a statement saying that he is open to ‘staying away from the Rajya Sabha’ in the future. The former cricketer said that he has a history of refusing Rajya Sabha seats and can do so again.

Without naming Union Minister Arun Jaitley, Sidhu said, “Two years back, I refused the Rajya Sabha seat in lieu of relinquishing the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat for a fatherly figure.” It can be recalled that Sidhu had not campaigned for Jaitley in 2014 Parliament elections. The Union Minister had lost the seat to Congress candidate Captain Amarinder Singh. However he said that the current nomination by Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds importance as he is not only a great example of inspiration but is also a role model in his life.

Sidhu further added, “If this nomination takes me towards the welfare of Punjab, I will take a bow. If it takes me away from the welfare of my state, I would prefer staying away from Rajya Sabha than staying away from Punjab.”

It’s been quite long since Sidhu had participated in any political activity in Punjab.
