Kapil Sharma has becaome the new king of controversies?
Kapil Sharma is touted as a man who saved comedy on Indian TV. He is also the man who redefined family entertainment on television.
If Kapil Sharma is the saviour as he is said to be, I wonder why nurses in Punjab are on the warpath against him?
The nurses and nursing students recently held a demonstration in Amritsar, denouncing the show and its host for objectifying their life saving profession. They believe Rochelle Rao’s heterosexuality nurse on the show panders to the lowest common denominator. For instance, she is called a ‘darling’ and participates in a song with the doctor was really awkward.
“On directions of the All-India Nursing Federation, we have decided to launch a statewide protest against Kapil Sharma. On June 7, nurses across Punjab will be holding protests in their respective hospitals,” said Punjab Nursing Association general secretary Raj Bedi.”
Raj Bedi said the association is not satisfied with the reply received from the television channel on the allegations.
“The harm has been done to our reputation. This is no way of dealing with the issue,” she said.
In a letter addressed to the Trained Nurses’ Association of India, Sony TV had said that the show was for the purpose of entertainment and it had no intentions to hurt anyone out there. However, nurses from Amritsar, Kapil’s birthplace, who have registered a complaint at a police station alleging that the show has demeaned their profession by objectifying them in a unpleasing manner, did not accept the channel’s reasoning.
The nursing staff not only raised slogans against Kapil Sharma, but also depicted him as a patient lying on a stretcher and is being treated by the nurses. One of the protesting nurse said,
“This is our way of telling Kapil the kind of work that is being done by nurses on regular basis.”
And on other hand:
Comedian and actor Kapil Sharma, who landed in trouble for the controversial portrayal of nurses in his show “The Kapil Sharma Show”, says the protesters might have had some misunderstanding and that the show doesn’t have any intentions to hurt anyone.
When asked if characters dressed as nurses will still be a part of his show after the controversy, “Definitely, they will still be seen. I feel that some people might have had some misunderstanding, and it happens sometimes. They love us and watch the show, that’s why they might have thought that way”, Kapil replied.
Kapil sharma faced the media on the sidelines of the shoot of his recent show, which featured singer Mika Singh, cricketer Chris Gayle and singer Kanika Kapoor.
Nurses from Amritsar, Kapil’s birthplace and the constituency of Navjot Singh Sidhu, have registered a complaint at a police station alleging that the show has demeaned their profession.
They held protests, burnt his effigy, and intend to lodge a defamation case against him.
While Rochelle Rao plays a “hot” nurse, Kiku Sharda plays an “overweight” nurse, in certain acts of the show.
Kapil added, “Our intention with whatever we do is to bring a smile on your face. If we are playing with any character, it is only for that particular character, not for the whole community.
“If I joke with Sidhu paaji, it doesn’t mean that I’m joking with the whole Sikh community. If I’m joking with Sunil (Grover), it doesn’t mean I’m saying anything to the doctor community, I’m talking about that particular character.”
